Instructions

  1. Make sure you have the [Instructions for using Hypothes.is](https://dmil.notion.site/Instructions-for-using-Hypothes-is-431a78858a1440548fd5f15b0f2a1c01) browser extension installed (see “Instructions for Hypothes.is” below if you don’t)

  2. Click on this link to read the paper https://hyp.is/u_i_cFhVEe6Mb6v2FwUdzg/genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13059-020-02133-w

  3. Make sure to annotate as you go and leave notes in the margins. Don’t forget to select the Data MS 2026🧠💡🤖📊 group when you leave a note, otherwise we won’t be able to see your note (make sure you’re not leaving it in the “public” group - otherwise the whole world can see it).

  4. Optional: Having fun and want to keep going? ****Here’s a follow-up piece and a response piece. If you do read these, leave some notes in Hypothes.is too! They may have some terminology we haven’t covered yet so reading together will help!

“Day science” and “Night science” are the same thing—if done right!

Hmm…a gorilla…must have something to do with this fun paper we’re about to read. I’m so enticed I must read it now and share all my thoughts!

You can annotate class readings using Hypothes.is and we'll all be able to make comments and respond to one another's comments in real time. Hopefully this is less tiring than writing up a reaction. And we can help each other understand the confusing parts or discuss the interesting parts!

Step1: Sign up for an account on Hypothes.is

https://hypothes.is/signup

Step 2: Download the Chrome extension or bookmarklet

https://web.hypothes.is/help/which-browsers-are-supported-by-hypothesis/Links to an external site.

Step 3: Join our class group at the link below:

Step 4: You should be able to hit "Visit the annotations in context" to navigate to the article we're collectively annotating.

Step 5: This will pop up a viewer. You should be able to annotate the document now from the sidebar on the right side. Make sure you've selected the class group to keep those annotations to the group. You can also add private annotations that only you can see. But the whole idea is for us to interact with each other as we read!

Step 6: Add comments, or respond to someone else's comment as you go along! You can just highlight some text and press "annotate" when you see something worth discussing. We will have some time during the next class to debrief, so it's okay if our discussion is unfinished. Just remember to bring it up during the class discussio
